Fund a Charity?

There are many companies that advertise that part of their income or profit goes to a named non profit charity. This can be a great way to help fund charities that cannot afford to advertise their good works. However, many of the companies do not say how much money or what percentage actually goes to the charity. In many cases it is not even a half-of-one-percent. I do not pay any attention to a company that says it will give part of their income to a charity unless the company states how much. Even if the company just says a nickel on $10 profit goes to the charity, at least it tells me what type of commitment has been made.

Some companies will put a cap on the donation by saying, they will donate five-percent up to a total of $100,000.

The California Attorney General's Office requires telemarketers that collect for non profit charities to report total amounts collected and how much went to the charity, and how much to administration. The Attorney General's Office says many of these telemarketer collection firms only send five-percent of the amount collected to the Charity. In California the law says they must tell you what percentage is sent to the charity if you ask, but many will say they don't know.

Always know how much of the dollar you are giving goes to the charity and how much goes to the collector.
